The Piedmont Gardeners
Our Mission

In 1991, Charlotte Moore and Laurie Pannell conceived the idea for a garden club for women of Athens and the surrounding area. The bylaws, written under the guidance of Beth Lewis, state the purpose of the club: “to form a small community of serious gardeners whose primary interest is to enhance the gardening skills and knowledge of its members.” The speakers at the meetings, field trips, and many projects of the group fulfill this mission.

The club has two major ongoing projects: (1) The Annual Spring Garden Tour of Athens and (2) maintenance of the herb garden at the Athens Welcome Center.

In addition to plants, a trellis, an arbor, a bench, and an irrigation system at the Welcome Center, the club has funded a number of local projects related to gardening, including:

    1. West Broad St. median plantings (crape myrtles)
    2. Two benches for UGA Trial Gardens
    3. Water pump for Barnett Shoals Elementary School water garden
    4. Tax payment for 5-Acre Woods—an Over-the-River Neighborhood Association purchase to save land from development
    5. Donation for Council on Aging garden projects
    6. Supplies for the Boys’ & Girls’ Club garden
    7. Gardening books for the Athens-Clarke County Public Library
