The Piedmont Gardeners

Founded in 1992

Established over 20 years ago, The Piedmont Gardeners membership brings their combined experience and expertise of serious gardening to serve Athens and the surrounding area. Each member expands their knowledge about horticulture, landscape design and environmental issues in the group’s on-going monthly programs, field trips and community service projects. While continuing to gain knowledge is important, it is sharing the love for gardens and promoting public awareness about gardening in Athens that is at the core of group’s mission.

Since 1992, the Piedmont Gardeners have organized and hosted the Annual Spring Garden Tour of Athens, Georgia. The tour showcases five exceptional private residential gardens in the area and attracts visitors from all over the region. The club uses the proceeds from the garden tour for an annual scholarship to recognize an outstanding student entering the fifth year of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Georgia . The club also funded improvements of the garden including adding a trellis, benches and an irrigation system. Other community efforts in the past include:

    1. West Broad St. median plantings (crape myrtles)
    2. Two benches for UGA Trial Gardens
    3. Water pump for Barnett Shoals Elementary School water garden
    4. Tax payment for 5-Acre Woods—an Over-the-River Neighborhood Association purchase to save land from development
    5. Donation for Council on Aging garden projects
    6. Supplies for the Boys’ & Girls’ Club garden
    7. Gardening books for the Athens-Clarke County Public Library
